About this rug

The orange and blue cartouches in the wide navy border are remarkable. Scrolling vines, palmettes and flower heads in cream, steel blue and gold cover the deep red field. A large navy medallion sits at the center, its star points reaching into the red around a red heart with a blue-gray rosette. Gorgeous navy spandrels fill the four corners, each with a cream corner piece among small blossoms. The wide main border is navy, set with large orange and blue cartouches between curling leaves in red and pink. A red floral band runs outside the navy, and narrow cream and red stripes edge it on the inner side. The pile is full across the face and in every border. It holds a large room together, the dark navy grounding the bright red. At 9'10" by 13'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mashhad rugs

Imam Riza, the eighth Shi’ite imam, is buried at Mashhad, and the city is a great destination of pilgrims. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs those pilgrims brought from other provinces. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. Its rugs show deep madder red grounds, a single dominant medallion, and borders wide enough to hold their own at scale. This rug has the single navy medallion and the deep red ground. Loose vines and flowers fill the red, and the wide border frames the whole field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
