About this rug

A ring of layered leaves in olive, camel and navy gives this rug a remarkable look. A rust red ground, streaked with natural abrash, opens around a small dark medallion topped with delicate pendants. A ring of layered leaves in olive, camel and navy wraps the field like a garland, an unusual and painterly gesture. Several dark borders and guard bands with coral and blue accents build a deep, shadowed frame around it all. The rug has a moody, antique gravity. That garland composition gives a decorator something to build a room around, and it thrives among dark woods, aged brass and low, warm light. At 10'2" by 13'5", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mashhad rugs

Imam Riza, the eighth Shi’ite imam, is buried at Mashhad, and the city is a great destination of pilgrims. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. Its rugs show deep madder red grounds, a single dominant medallion, and borders wide enough to hold their own at scale. This rug has all three: the dark red, the central medallion and the deep stacked borders. It adds the leaf wreath that frames the field, a flourish Mashhad workshops used more than most. If a vintage Persian rug is genuinely room-sized and the red is dark rather than bright, Mashhad is often where it came from.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
