About this rug

Delightful birds perch beside a few of the vases on this rug. Urns, flowering vines and large blossoms crowd a deep red field, and birds perch beside a few of the vases. The gorgeous medallion, lobed and rimmed in ivory and camel, holds a red lozenge core, ringed by navy scrolls. Beautiful stepped corner pieces in pale blue and camel fill the four corners. The border is navy, set with round vignettes of columned buildings in sky blue and tan, alternating with striped cartouches in olive, red and blue. Narrow guard stripes in camel and red mark the inner edge. Only small flecks of wear show in the full pile. It anchors a study or a formal parlor, where the deep red and navy stand up to dark wood and the pale blue lifts the corners. At 9'11" by 13', it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashmar rugs

Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, described Khorasan as almost entirely desert, with its small towns and villages set in scattered oases. He traced the variety of its patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. The workshops of Kashmar, in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, worked large. This rug shows the taste for pictorial design more fully than most. Urns and birds in the field and columned buildings in the border make the surface read as a series of small scenes. The border is generous, wide enough for a full row of round vignettes. It still has a medallion at the center, the habit of the west, but the urns and vines around it are the town’s own.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
