About this rug

The lobed medallion looks charming with a navy star core at its center. Dainty curling vines and blossoms in tan, steel blue and sage cover the deep red field. A handsome lobed medallion anchors the middle, slate blue and tan around a navy star core. Pale teal corner pieces carry vine work and small flowers in tan and blue. The main border is navy, with blue, tan and crimson blossoms on a vine. A wide cream stripe with small red and blue flowers lines its inner side, with narrower blue stripes beyond. Thin patches show in the field, and tiny white dots mark where the foundation appears. The pale teal corners give the red some relief in a spacious room. At 9'6" by 13', it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Najafabad rugs

Carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan in the second quarter of the 20th century and expanded rapidly, making carpets for the European market. Najafabad sits just west of Isfahan in central Persia, and its workshops wove in the Isfahan manner at a more practical scale. That means centered medallions, curling vine and corner spandrels, in room sizes for everyday use rather than for collectors. On this rug the wide cream stripe sets the navy border apart from the red field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
