About this rug

A fine allover vine curls through the deep red field of this charming rug. In the center of the deep red field stands a splendid pointed navy lozenge medallion, its cream core set with a pale blue rosette. Navy pendants taper to a point at either end, and a fine allover vine curls through the red. Cream spandrels trimmed in navy close the corners. A wide navy band forms the main border, where palmettes, a fan of petals, are joined by pretty looping rose vines. On each side, narrow bud stripes frame a pale blue guard band of leaves and flowers. The nap stays full, with only a scatter of fine pale flecks, and the navy border ground turns green in a few spots. It holds the center of a large room, with weight from the red and navy and light from the pale blue. At 9'3" by 13'1", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Kashan, in central Persia, is the city people think of first for the formal Persian rug. It rests on one medallion, spandrels in each corner and a field of scrolling vines and palmettes. Madder takes deeply in Kashan wool, and old pieces keep their reds saturated. These were made to be the finest rug a household owned, and the plan here carries that intent. This one stays close to the type, with a pointed lozenge medallion, cream spandrels and a full field of vine. The red still reads at strength against the navy.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
