The rug has charming palmettes in cream, sky blue and olive gold. Across a deep red field, palmettes, rosettes and curling vines in cream, sky blue and olive gold spread from edge to edge. Each palmette is a fan of petals. The field has no medallion and no spandrels. The handsome main border is near black, a dark brown that reads navy in low light, scrolling with vines and rosettes in terracotta and cream. Guard stripes frame it on both sides, each a sky blue band of small flowers between cream stripes edged in thin gold lines. A few spots in the field are worn low, but the red keeps its depth. Sky blue and cream lift the red field, while the dark border frames it like a classic carpet. At 9'11" by 13'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

About Kashan rugs
Costly silk carpets with figure designs, such as the hunting carpet now in Vienna, were probably woven in Kashan, the silk center of Persia. It was long the custom to bring raw silk from other places to Kashan to be spun and dyed there. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug, with a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. This one keeps the vine and palmette and leaves out the medallion and corners, so the field becomes one garden running to the border. The border is dark and closely worked, a good frame for so much red.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
