The near-black diamond inside the lobed oval medallion is the charming heart of this rug. Pretty curling vines, palmettes and flower heads in cream, gold and blue cover the deep red field. A splendid lobed oval medallion encloses a near-black diamond with a cream and steel blue core, and pointed pendants reach along the long axis. Cream corner pieces carry blue and red floral drawing in all four corners. Around it, the near-black main border carries cream scrolling vines and red, blue and green flower heads. Cream floral bands edge it on the inside, with a light blue palmette band outside. The pile is low in a pale streak left of the medallion, where the red reads lighter, and full elsewhere. It grounds a spacious seating group, the bright red field set against the near-black border. At 9'10" by 13', it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Nothing is known of Kashan carpets from the 1600s through the 1800s; then, at the dawn of the 20th century, a large commercial production arose there. The formal Persian rug is most closely tied to the central Persian city of Kashan: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Saturated madder reds are what old Kashans are known for. This piece has that layout: an oval medallion, cream corner pieces and a red field of fine vine drawing. The near-black border sets off the cream and gold in the field.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
