About this rug

Palmettes and flower heads stand in strict rows down the length of this remarkable deep red rug. Delicate scrolling vines, large palmettes and leaf-drops in cream, gold and steel blue cover the deep red field in a dense lattice. No medallion breaks the repeat; the palmettes and flower heads stand in strict rows down the length. Cream forms the main border, set with charming round rosettes in rust and rows of small upright sprays. Steel blue guard stripes with small blossoms frame this wide band on both sides. The pile is full over the whole face. The cream border lightens the heavy red center in a formal room. At 9'7" by 12'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Centered medallions, borders that turn cleanly at the corners and vine scrolls planned in full before weaving began are the marks of Tabriz work. This rug shows the planned vine scroll, and its border turns cleanly at each corner. Steel blue guards and a cream border bring a cool edge to the warm red ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
