Two cream arched pieces cap the field at each end of this charming rug. A cusped navy medallion with a cream center sits on the deep red field, with graceful sprays of small blossoms and leaves on either side. Gorgeous teardrop pendants in navy lead off the medallion top and bottom. Cream spandrels edged in pale blue fill the four corners with scrolling vine, and two cream arched pieces cap the field at each end. The red main border holds pale blue and rose cartouches among small flowering vines, between navy guard stripes and a thin cream zigzag band. The nap is worn down across the field and flecked with pale foundation threads, lighter in the borders. It brings strong red and navy into a large space, and the cream corners keep the center open. At 10' by 12'4", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
Tabriz stood for a long period on the great caravan routes to Trebizond and Tiflis, and became the principal market of Persia for the export of rugs. UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Tabriz is a workshop city, up in northwestern Persia. The discipline shows in how the pattern is laid out. Here the medallion sits at the exact center, the pendants mirror each other above and below, and the four corner pieces match. Tabriz workshops also reached for more colors than most, which explains the cream and pale blue set against the red. The surface is the one exception to the polish seen in many Tabriz rugs, worn low and flecked across the field, giving this formal plan a relaxed feel.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
