An ivory star with a dark center gives the slate blue medallion of this rug a charming focus. Over a deep red field, angular vines carry ivory palmettes, pale green leaves and small rosettes. A splendid stepped medallion anchors the middle, its slate blue ground holding an ivory star with a dark center, and a pendant at each end. Beautiful ivory spandrels curve across each corner, filled with small flowers and scrolls. The main border is violet, set with ivory cross-shaped blossoms and small salmon flowers. Olive guard bands with red and cream detail frame the border on each side. Pile is even over the red field, with light low spots along the medallion edge and the upper left. In a large room, the violet border and ivory corners set off the red center. At 8'6" by 11'8", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

About Tabriz rugs
A special court workshop, possibly at Tabriz, is credited with translating the most splendid book illuminations into carpets. Since the late 19th century a complex design has usually reached the weavers as a cartoon, laid out on squared paper with one square for each knot. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Its workshops used a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds appear alongside the reds. Here the ivory corners and the blue-violet border set cool tones around the red field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
