About this rug

Boteh and flower heads give this deep red field a delightful look. Across a deep red field, vines link the paisley leaf-drop, boteh and flower heads in ivory, olive and pale blue-green. A large lobed medallion sits at the center, its cream core ringed by a near-black ground, with pendants above and below. Beautiful ivory spandrels sit in all four corners, each with a red and green striped barrel shape. Navy fills the wide main border, with brown and salmon palmettes and small orange flowers. Narrow guard stripes in red and teal edge it on both sides, inside an olive green band. White specks and the weave show in the red field, where the pile is low. Ivory corners lighten the red and navy so they do not feel heavy in a large room. At 7'10" by 11'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

From the middle of the 1800s commercial carpet weaving revived in Persia, and Tabriz was one of its most important centers, weaving largely for Europe. The Swiss firm Ziegler, in time the biggest exporter of carpets from Persia, had its first lucky break in Tabriz in 1876. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. Tabriz workshops also worked in a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds turn up beside the reds. This rug sets ivory corners against the red field and the lobed medallion.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
