About this rug

Lovely cream and steel blue scrollwork frames the deep red field. Across a deep red field, small sprays of flowers and curling leaves in cream, steel blue and green gather around the center. A large lobed medallion fills the middle, with a near-black outer band, a cream ring and a red core, and small near-black pendants above and below. Cream and steel blue scrollwork frames the field and swells into lobes at the corners and the middle of each side. The outer border is dark brown, carrying charming pink and red flower heads with green leaves. Narrow guard stripes in red and cream edge it. The pile is low in places across the field, where the red reads paler than near the ends. It suits a room with wood floors, the steel blue frame cooling the warm red ground. At 7'1" by 10'7", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

From the middle of the 1800s commercial carpet weaving revived in Persia, and Tabriz was one of its most important centers, weaving largely for Europe. The Swiss firm Ziegler, in time the biggest exporter of carpets from Persia, had its first lucky break in Tabriz in 1876. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. Medallions sit properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan laid out in full before weaving began. Tabriz workshops also worked in a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds turn up beside the reds. This rug shows the centered medallion and borders that turn cleanly at the corners. Cream and steel blue make a wide frame around the red field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
