About this rug

On this remarkable rug, pink and red flowers are strewn on the near-black ground of the broad border. The deep red field is crowded with small blossoms and curling vines in cream, blue and green. A splendid central medallion in cream holds a red floral core inside a near-black star frame, with small near-black pendants above and below. Cream spandrels fill the four corners, set with pretty floral sprays in blue, pink and green. Its broad border sits on a near-black ground, strewn with pink and red flowers, small blossoms and green leaves. Ochre bands with small flowers lie on either side of it, and a thin teal stripe edges the field. The pile is full. It holds a formal room together, the cream corners opening up a field this red. At 7'7" by 10'11", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Medallions are properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan worked out in full before weaving began. This rug keeps that order: the medallion sits in the middle of the red ground, with a matching spandrel in each corner. Pale blue and teal notes run through the corners and the narrow stripe beside the field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
