About this rug

Rows of small boteh in rose, cream, blue and green make this a delightful rug. A deep red field carries rows of small boteh motifs in rose, cream, blue and green, repeated edge to edge. The design is an all-over repeat with no central medallion. No corner pieces break the field, which runs straight to the first stripes. The gorgeous main border is cream, set with burgundy lozenges, red flower stems and teal triangles in a repeating chain. Narrow bands in blue, gold and navy, edged with a cream zigzag, run on both sides of it. The pile is full across the field, with a few scattered low specks in the borders. The red field offers one strong color to build around when placed with dark furniture. At 7' by 10'10", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. It had its rugs made less complex than traditional Persian carpets, so that they would not look out of place in European homes. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, and the shared character is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. Here the all-over field is a lattice of small boteh motifs rather than florals, set inside a cream border. Bands of blue, gold and navy stripes repeat on all four sides, framing the field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
