About this rug

The layered geometric medallion in navy, rose and light blue is charming on the brick red field. A brick red field carries a layered geometric medallion in navy, rose and light blue, ringed by the angular leaves, stars and stems that fill the ground. Handsome ivory corner spandrels loaded with hooked motifs brighten the frame, and the nearly black main border walks a line of hexagonal rosettes between coral guard stripes. Honest wear across the pile gives the colors a softened, rustic glow. This is the kind of rug people hunt for as a character piece: sturdy, colorful and visibly loved. It suits a farmhouse, rustic or eclectic room well. At 7'10" by 11'4", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Tabriz stood for a long period on the great caravan routes to Trebizond and Tiflis, and became the principal market of Persia for the export of rugs. UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is the great city workshop of the region, known for curved, formal drawing. The villages around it share a border with the Heriz district just to the east, and this rug speaks that neighbor’s language. It has straight lines, a stepped medallion and hooked motifs in the corners, everything built from angles rather than curves. The red, navy and ivory are the classic palette of the district.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
