About this rug

The ivory border with its red tulip heads frames the deep red field of this lovely rug. The deep red field is covered with charming scrolling vines, palmettes and flower heads in ivory, pale green, rose and brown. There is no single medallion; large palmettes repeat down the center line, mirrored left and right. The field corners carry the same vines and palmettes, with no separate corner panel. A beautiful ivory main border carries large palmettes and red tulip heads in pale green and rose. A pale green guard stripe runs outside it and a narrow red and ivory stripe within. The pile is low in places along the center of the field, where the red reads paler and the weave shows through. The dense drawing holds the red, ivory and green in a steady balance. At 9'4" by 12'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Tabriz stood for a long period on the great caravan routes to Trebizond and Tiflis, and became the principal market of Persia for the export of rugs. UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. The vine scrolls follow a plan laid out in full before weaving began. This rug shows it in the mirrored halves of the field and the clean turn of the ivory border at each corner. Its field is a deep red, with the vines and palmettes worked in ivory, pale green and rose.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
