About this rug

A lovely allover garden of large palmettes and lancet leaves fills the deep red field. A deep red field carries an allover garden of large palmettes, lancet leaves and small blossoms, joined by fine vine scrolls in ivory and sage. There is no medallion and there are no corner pieces, only mirrored rows repeating from edge to edge. The wide dark blue main border carries coral, gold and sage palmettes and flower heads on a delicate scrolling vine. Each palmette is a fan of petals. Narrow ivory and red guard stripes frame it inside and out. The pile is worn low across the field, with paler, softer patches toward the upper left. It brings a glow to a large room, the red and dark blue staying warm together. At 9'10" by 11'7", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Tabriz stood for a long period on the great caravan routes to Trebizond and Tiflis, and became the principal market of Persia for the export of rugs. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Medallions are properly centered, borders resolve cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls were laid out by someone who saw the whole cartoon before starting. This rug has no medallion at all, yet it keeps that order: palmettes and leaves repeat in mirrored rows, and the dark blue border turns each corner without a break. Tabriz workshops also used a wider palette than most, and here the red leads, with sage, ivory and rose set around it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
