About this rug

The near-black medallion with an ivory core and a pale blue center is the place to start describing this lovely rug. Graceful scrolling vines and small blossoms in ivory, steel blue and gold crowd the deep red field. A large lobed near-black medallion with an ivory core and a pale blue center rests in the middle, its pendants extending up and down. Handsome ivory spandrels with touches of pale blue occupy each corner, edged in near-black. The main border is aubergine, with palmettes and rosettes in red, gold and cream. Guard stripes of steel blue and ivory run along either edge of the broad frame. Pile runs low in spots over the face, and there the red reads paler. It grounds a large floor, the deep red set off by the aubergine frame and ivory corners. At 9'10" by 13'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Nothing is known of Kashan carpets from the 1600s through the 1800s; then, at the dawn of the 20th century, a large commercial production arose there. Kashan drawing centers on a medallion, with a spandrel in each corner and vines and palmettes across the ground. The saturated madder red is what old Kashans are known for. This rug follows that plan, with a near-black medallion and ivory corners in the red field, inside an aubergine border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
