About this rug

This wonderful rug has a dark plum diamond medallion at its center. Fine vines, palmettes and little flowers in cream, gold and blue crowd the burgundy field. A splendid dark plum diamond medallion at the center holds a cream core with a teal edge and a blue flower, and pointed pendants run above and below. Cream pieces mark the four field corners against dark plum. Across the broad main border, a dark plum ground carries lovely red and cream vines, palmettes and small blue flowers. Several narrow guard stripes, in teal, cream and red with rows of tiny flowers, frame the border on both sides. The pile is full over the face and in each band. It anchors a large room, with the dark plum border holding the burgundy field in place. At 8'6" by 13', it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Old Kashans are known for saturated madder reds. This rug has a central medallion and cream pieces in the corners, and its field is a clear burgundy red. The dark plum border holds red vines and palmettes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
