Large boteh in dark red with dark outlines sit in the tan border of this lovely rug. Dainty rosettes and boteh cover the burgundy field in cream, steel blue and tan, with small green leaf sprigs between them. No medallion interrupts the field; the rosettes and boteh repeat across the whole ground. The main border is tan, carrying large boteh in dark red with dark outlines, between rosettes in blue and green. Narrow guard stripes in blue-gray and brown, with small red flowers, flank the main border. Pile runs low in spots, with white specks and scuffed patches across the field. On pale walls, the red ground warms the center of the space while blue in the drawing keeps it light. At 8'4" by 11'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Yazd rugs
Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, set Yazd in the center of a sandy plain, midway between Kerman and Kashan. He found almost the last of the fire-worshippers of Persia still following the ancient faith there. Yazd sits on the edge of the central Persian desert and has been a textile city for centuries. Weavers there borrowed the medallion and vine drawing of Kerman to the south and worked it in a slightly cooler palette. This rug keeps the vine drawing but spreads it as an all-over repeat of rosettes and boteh instead of gathering it at a center.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
