Tiny boteh in navy and salmon give the burgundy red field a delightful repeat. Rows of tiny boteh in navy and salmon fill the burgundy red field from end to end, set on the diagonal with small blue leaves between them. The field is allover, with neither medallion nor corner pieces, so the repeat runs right up to the border. A wide beige main border carries small hooked figures and navy lozenges. Guard stripes run on both sides of it: a handsome blue band of tiny rosettes, red twisted rope, and an olive band of hearts and chevrons. The pile stands dense and full throughout. It settles a large room with one broad sheet of red, and the border’s beige and blue give that field a clear frame. At 7'9" by 10'11", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. Villages around it sold their rugs under their own names, and what they share is an all-over field and a restrained palette. This one keeps the all-over plan, with tiny boteh running to the border and no center piece to interrupt them. It departs in color: the red is strong rather than muted, and only the pale border and blue stripes bring in a softer note.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
