About this rug

Down the middle, a delightful column of larger palmettes runs in place of a medallion. The deep red field holds charming scrolling vines and large palmettes in tan, sage gray and pale blue. A column of larger palmettes, each with a near-black heart, runs down the middle in place of a medallion. The wide main border is beige, carrying scrolling vines and rust palmettes with flower heads in pink, olive and near-black. Three guard stripes frame the field: a near-black rosette chain, a pale blue and red lozenge band and a gold zigzag. Full pile covers the field, with small white specks scattered across the border and a few in the red. It anchors a large seating group, the beige border lightening the weight of the red ground. At 9'4" by 12'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Sarouk rugs

Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. The Swiss firm Ziegler began there in the mid-1870s with 40 looms, and by 1894 had 1,200 in the town and 1,500 more in the surrounding villages. Sarouk sits in the Arak district of central Persia and gave its name to one of the most exported Persian rugs of the twentieth century. The type has a floral field, usually on rose or deep madder, worked in curves. This rug has that floral field on deep red, its vines curling across the whole face. The beige border frames the red in a lighter tone.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
