About this rug

Cream and brown guls with black outlines march across the deep red field in charming rows. Across the deep red field run staggered rows of big octagonal guls in cream and brown, outlined in black. Gul is the Persian word for flower, and the figure is the tribal emblem. Small cross-shaped figures with red star centers fill the spaces between them. The grid replaces a medallion and corner pieces, running straight to the guard stripes. A broad border in darker red carries splendid diamond lattices down the sides and cream stepped hooks across the short ends. Narrow guard stripes of fine black and cream zigzags frame it. Only a few faint pale patches left of center mark lower pile. It grounds a seating group: the black outlines keep the grid crisp, and the cream and brown add depth to the red. At 9'8" by 12'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A main carpet was the most important and expensive weaving of every Turkmen tribe, and the main floor covering of the tent. A Turkmen girl was already an experienced weaver by the time she was old enough to marry, often shortly before she turned twenty. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. As you cross the room, a good Torkaman moves from rust through deep red to brick. Here the field leans bright red and the borders go darker toward brick, so the shift shows at a glance. The grid holds firm, and the large guls keep their place from end to end.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
