About this rug

A compact navy lozenge medallion is the delightful center of the burgundy red field. Around a compact navy lozenge medallion, a burgundy red field runs with fine vines and flower heads in navy, gray blue and cream. Its core is cream around a blue star, and a navy pendant sits above and below. Small cream triangles edged in blue sit in the dark navy corners. A wide navy border carries scrolling vines and rose flowers, inside a cream guard and a gray blue band of palmettes. Wear is broad: the pile runs low above the medallion and through the lower center, leaving pale streaks of foundation. The borders keep more pile, with one pale spot on the left. It holds its own in a large, dim room, where burgundy and navy sit close and the cream and rose stand out. At 9'10" by 12'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mashhad rugs

Imam Riza, the eighth Shi’ite imam, is buried at Mashhad, and the city is a great destination of pilgrims. In 1877 the Qajar shah gave London’s South Kensington Museum 14 carpets chosen by his ministers to represent the best being woven, one of them made in Mashhad. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. This rug fits that picture: room-sized, a red that runs dark rather than bright, and a wide navy border built to hold its own at this scale. It departs in one place. The medallion is compact rather than dominant, so the scrolling vines across the field carry more of the design than the center does.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
