About this rug

The rug has a remarkable herati lattice of fish and leaves. Deep red runs through the gorgeous stepped diamond medallion, the frames around the corner pieces and the wide main border. Together they surround a navy field packed with herati, a lattice of fish and leaves that signals abundance, in red, rose, ivory and gold. The red lattice is so dense that the whole rug reads deep red from across the room. The medallion holds a small lattice of its own, and the ivory corner pieces carry lovely flowers in navy and red. The main border winds small blossoms on curling stems, with a cream floral band and a green zigzag guard inside it. The pile is low in places, most visibly near the top end, giving the navy a mottled look. The dark navy center gives the eye a place to rest, while the deep red frame keeps it warm. At 9'6" by 13'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large from the start. Many Mahal rugs have a wide field, generous spacing between the motifs and a palette that leans soft. This one departs on both counts. The herati repeat is tightly packed and the red and navy are strong, so it reads richer and denser than the type suggests. The diamond medallion and corner pieces still give the field a firm frame. At this size it fills a big room with one clear design, the job most Mahals were made for.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
