About this rug

The cream floral spray in the dark navy ring is the place to start describing this remarkable rug. Worked on a deep red field, dainty scrolling vines and tiny blossoms spread in cream, steel blue and some pale green. The middle of the field carries a diamond medallion, a cream floral spray inside a dark navy ring edged in teal, with notched pendants above and below. Gorgeous cream and pale blue spandrels hold blue vine and pink blossoms at the four corners. The border proper is dark navy, carrying large rosettes in dusty rose and cream. Narrow steel blue and cream guard stripes run along each side of the border. Pile is full over the face and the borders. Teal and steel blue cool the red ground in a large room. At 9' by 12'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. It had its rugs made less complex than traditional Persian carpets, so that they would not look out of place in European homes. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the beginning. This rug has the wide field of that type, with a medallion at the center and floral sprays scattered across the red. Cream and teal sit among the flowers, and the navy border closes the field. Pink blossoms in the corners echo the dusty rose rosettes of the border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
