About this rug

Delightful long-tailed birds face each other in the wide blue border. Against a deep red field, curling vines carry palmettes and flowers in cream and blue, set around a splendid star-shaped blue medallion with gold petals and a small rosette heart. The corners are cream, with gold and navy ornament. The wide main border is a clear mid blue, scattered with flower heads and palmettes in red, cream and gold, with facing long-tailed birds and small gold animals. A dark navy guard stripe with a cream scroll vine edges it on the inside. The pile stays full, and the red holds its depth from end to end. It reads as bright and open, since the wide blue border frames the red generously; a sunlit room with white walls and light oak lets both colors show. At 8'4" by 11'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Najafabad rugs

Carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan in the second quarter of the 20th century and expanded rapidly, making carpets for the European market. Najafabad sits just west of Isfahan in central Persia, and its workshops wove in the Isfahan manner at a more practical scale. Centered medallions, curling vine and corner spandrels, but in room sizes and everyday wool rather than for collectors. The palette is classic Persian, madder red with ivory and indigo. This rug has all of it: the star medallion, the curling vine and the cream corner spandrels, on madder red with cream and indigo. Its one extra is the border, a wide blue frame lively with birds and small animals, which gives the classic plan a brighter edge.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
