About this rug

The all-over repeat of palmettes and blossoms is charming on the burgundy field. Set within a burgundy field, lovely curling vines hold palmettes and blossoms in cream, pale blue and ochre. The pattern is an all-over repeat with no medallion. A line of larger palmettes in cream, pale blue and navy runs down the center. No corner spandrels interrupt the repeat. The main border is a narrow dark blue band, set with small rosettes in gold, rust and rose. Narrow guard stripes in cream and tan flank the border. The pile is full in most of the field and low in a few patches. Pale blue notes cool the burgundy in a formal room. At 8'10" by 12'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz stood for a long period on the great caravan routes to Trebizond and Tiflis, and became the principal market of Persia for the export of rugs. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Centered medallions, borders that turn cleanly at the corners and vine scrolls planned in full before weaving began are the marks of Tabriz work. This rug is an all-over vine scroll with no medallion, and its narrow border turns cleanly at each corner. The burgundy ground sets the cream and pale blue motifs in strong contrast.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
