About this rug

Large palmettes in cream, sage and tan give the deep red field a wonderful pattern. Across a deep red field, large palmettes in cream, sage and tan are linked by dainty curling stems and small flowers. The design is an all-over repeat with no central medallion, mirrored from side to side. Cream and pink flower heads with green and red scrolling leaves ride a gorgeous near-black border, set between slim cream bands of small red flowers. The pile is low in patches across the red field, where the color reads paler. It holds a formal room together, the near-black border holding in the red field. At 8' by 11'8", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

A special court workshop, possibly at Tabriz, is credited with translating the most splendid book illuminations into carpets. Since the late 19th century a complex design has usually reached the weavers as a cartoon, laid out on squared paper with one square for each knot. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan laid out in full before weaving began. In this rug the stems and palmettes repeat from end to end inside the near-black border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
