Pink and red palmettes ride a near-black border on this lovely rug. Delicate curled vines, palmettes and small blossoms in cream, blue, olive and rust cover the burgundy field. A handsome lobed medallion with a near-black outline anchors the middle, its heart rust and blue, with a smaller pendant shape above and below. Near-black corners hold scrolling vines and flowers around the field’s rounded outline. Pink and red palmettes ride a near-black border, between cream guard bands carrying red flowers and a blue vine. White specks and low patches show across the field, and the burgundy turns paler toward the upper left. The near-black border holds the red field in place across a large room. At 7'10" by 11'2", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mashhad rugs
Imam Riza, the eighth Shi’ite imam, is buried at Mashhad, and the city is a great destination of pilgrims. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs those pilgrims brought from other provinces. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. Its rugs show deep madder red grounds, a single dominant medallion, and borders wide enough to hold their own at scale. This one has a single lobed medallion in a burgundy field, framed by a wide border and cream guard bands.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
