The burgundy field of this rug becomes a wonderful garden of bowls and vases of blossoms. Set with bowls and vases of blossoms among fine vines in cream and blue, the burgundy field becomes a garden. A gorgeous navy medallion around a cream scrollwork core holds the middle, pendants above and below. A large boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, fills each corner and holds a striped cartouche on navy. Crescent panels at the middle of each long side hold the same bowls. A beautiful cream main border runs a dark vine with blue palmettes between slim guard bands in blue and navy. A low-cut pile keeps the burgundy and navy deep. It suits a formal setting, with the burgundy and navy in one family and the cream border lightening the frame. At 7'5" by 10'6", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashmar rugs
Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. The Herat carpets are the classic carpets of Khorasan, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Kashmar is in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, and its workshops worked on a large scale. A taste for pictorial and garden designs, wide fields and generous borders sets it apart from the medallion tradition further west. On this rug the pictorial side shows in bowls and vases of flowers strewn across the field and in the large boteh at the corners. The medallion ties it to the west, but the vessels give the field a garden feel. The reds run deep, and the burgundy ground shows it.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
