About this rug

With a navy herati lattice across a burgundy field, this is a wonderful rug. Navy herati, the fish-and-leaf lattice, runs across a burgundy field from edge to edge, with lovely cream flowers set between the diamonds. Tiny orange animals wander through the rows. A small navy diamond medallion, edged in a cream sawtooth, holds a cream and blue core. Handsome navy corner triangles carry cream and orange details. The navy main border repeats red-edged cream diamonds along a vine, between red guard bands of small flowers. The pile shows no wear and stands tall and dense across the whole rug. It grounds a room, with burgundy and navy for depth and small notes of cream and orange to keep the surface lively. At 6'9" by 10'10", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hosseinabad rugs

Hamedan, the market city for the villages around it, is built partly on the mound of Ecbatana, the capital of Media, founded by Greek account around 678 BCE. Rugs from the villages around Hamedan were taken to the city, long one of the great rug markets of Persia, and were often sold abroad under its name. Hosseinabad is a village name that appears across the Hamedan weaving country of western Persia. These are plain-spoken village rugs. The drawing is geometric, though here the central figure, often large in this type, shrinks to a small diamond, which leaves the herati lattice to cover the field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
