Cell by cell, this lovely rug fills its burgundy field with small flowering plants in navy, black and cream. Set in a diamond lattice, small flowering plants in navy, black and cream fill the burgundy field cell by cell. A handsome stepped diamond medallion in navy and cream sits in the middle of the field, with a cream flower at its core. Navy corner triangles, cut off by stepped lines, hold cream diamond flowers. The main border sets deep red cartouches and four-petal flowers on a black ground, joined by delicate hooked cream scrolls. Cream chain guard stripes run on either side of it. Most of the field is worn low, the weave flecking through, and the left border has worn thinner. It holds a living room together, the burgundy carrying the warmth while the cream guard stripes add a light edge. At 6'9" by 11'11", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

About Joshaghan rugs
In the reign of Nadir Shah the carpet weaving of the Joshaghan district received a new impulse, and it flourished until nearly the middle of the 19th century. A century before Walter Hawley wrote on rugs in 1913, the Joshaghan district was weaving some of the best carpets of Persia. Joshaghan sits north of Isfahan in central Persia, and it has woven the same design for a very long time. The field is divided into a diamond lattice, each compartment holding a small stylized flowering plant. This rug keeps that layout and adds a stepped diamond medallion at the center. Seen from a distance, the lattice works as an overall pattern rather than a picture. The hooked scrolls and cartouches of the black border make a bolder frame than the small plants inside.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
