About this rug

A small navy oval caps each end of the medallion in this charming rug. Fine vines and palmettes in pale blue, rose and cream spread over the deep red field, rising from a handsome lobed navy medallion with a pale blue diamond core. A small navy oval caps the medallion at each end. Beautiful navy spandrels hold cream corner pieces, so the red field reads as a pointed oval. Red palmettes and looping rose vines run through the navy main border, with rose and cream bud stripes and a pale blue leaf band on both sides. A few scuffed streaks of low pile cross the field and run down the left border, and the rest keeps a full nap. It suits a traditional living room, where navy gives the red depth and pale blue keeps the borders light. At 8'2" by 12'2", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

It was long the custom to bring raw silk from other places to Kashan to be spun and dyed there. Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Kashan, a central Persian city, set the classic pattern for formal Persian rugs: a medallion, corner spandrels and a field of vine scrolls and palmettes. Rugs of this kind were a house’s showpiece. This one keeps the plan but adds a twist. The red field is a pointed oval held inside navy corner fields, and the palmettes are worked small and fine. A few scuffed streaks show a rug that has been lived with.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
