About this rug

Curling vines in cream, gold and steel blue crowd the deep red ground of this lovely rug. At the center, a stepped navy medallion with a light blue core sits on a deep red field crowded with curling vines in cream, gold and steel blue. Notched navy pendants reach from the top and bottom of the medallion into the surrounding vine lattice. Handsome cream corner pieces with pale blue scrolls and red florets fill the four corners. The main border is navy, set with red, cream and gold blossoms inside a broad frame. Narrow guard stripes in sky blue and cream run on both sides of the border. Pile is thin in a handful of places near the medallion and full across the rest. In a formal room, the saturated red ground holds its own against walnut furniture. At 7'3" by 10'10", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Their animal designs match those in royal manuscripts and book bindings, all of them born in the Safavid court design workshop. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Old Kashans are known for saturated madder reds. This piece follows that plan, with a stepped medallion, cream corner pieces and a red field of vine and palmette. The navy border frames the field with red and cream blossoms.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
