About this rug

A remarkable stepped medallion outlined in ivory stands out on this deep red field. A deep red field with a rose cast holds a big stepped medallion outlined in ivory, flanked by a teal heart, red petals and blue hexagons. Angular violet-navy pendants reach up and down from it, and beautiful squared violet-navy corner pieces fill with red and teal geometry. The main border is dark blue with a violet cast and carries pretty ivory-outlined hexagonal rosettes in teal and red between olive and brown guard stripes with small hooked motifs. The red moves a little from patch to patch, which keeps the large field lively. Violet, teal and red make an unusual, confident combination; it holds its own with gray walls, walnut floors and dark furniture. At 7'7" by 11'6", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Gorevan rugs

The carpets of the Heriz district were sold in the West under village names: Serapi for those in light, rather bright colors, and Gorevan for the darker ones. Serapi rugs, a Heriz type, take their name from the village of Sirab, in the mountains between Tabriz and Ardabil. Gorevan is a village in the Heriz district of northwestern Persia, and it weaves in the same language as its better-known neighbor. Big angular medallions and spandrels squared off at the corners are the district’s signature. All of that is here, in the stepped medallion and the angular corner pieces. What changes is the color. Instead of terracotta and copper against ivory, this rug runs deep red against violet-navy with teal and olive, and keeps the ivory for outlines.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
