About this rug

Its bold angular medallion is a remarkable sight on the vivid red field. A vivid red field carries a bold angular medallion layered in near-black burgundy and rose with gold highlights. Stiff stylized branches and blossoms fill the ground right up to the splendid ivory corner spandrels. A nearly black main border of large rosettes and hooked vines frames everything with real authority. The colors are unusually strong and saturated for a rug of this age, and the pile still has plenty of life in it. This is village weaving at its most confident, bold drawing and deep color, and the strong geometry sits as happily beside mid-century furniture as beside traditional pieces. At 8' by 12'8", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Gorevan rugs

Heriz carpets as the trade knows them do not predate the middle of the 19th century, when they took the place of a rustic weaving made for local use. The carpets of the Heriz district were sold in the West under village names: Serapi for those in light, rather bright colors, and Gorevan for the darker ones. Gorevan is a village in the Heriz district of northwestern Persia. It weaves in the same language as its better-known neighbor: big angular medallions, strong color against ivory, spandrels squared off at the corners. This rug is that language spoken loudly, the medallion filling most of the field and the dark border holding it all in. The red runs at full strength, and the ivory corners keep it from closing in.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
