About this rug

At the middle of this lovely rug sits a lobed medallion with an olive and gold core. Set within a deep red field, bouquets in small urns, scattered blossoms and leafy sprays in cream, blue and olive surround the center. At the middle sits a lobed medallion, near-black at its edge, with an olive and gold core and a pendant above and another below. Splendid blue spandrels sit in every corner, each holding a large cream palmette and a scatter of blossoms. The main border has a navy ground, filled with red and cream flower heads, palmettes and rosettes. Wide ochre guard bands edge the border on both sides, with a narrow blue and cream zigzag stripe inside. The pile is full, with a few small low spots in the field. On wood floors, the blue corners and the navy frame temper the red. At 6'8" by 10'7", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Vist rugs

Vist is a village in the Isfahan region, southwest of Khansar and close to Golpayegan. A study calls the Vist rug the best-known rug of the country south and southwest of Golpayegan. Young Vist weavers, just starting out, often wove a simpler boteh layout as practice. The medallion here has a scalloped outline with a pendant above and below. Bouquets and leafy sprays fill the red field around it, and the four corners are blue with cream palmettes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
