About this rug

A charming near-black medallion with lobed edges and a cream core around a blue star sits at the center. At the center, a near-black medallion with lobed edges and a cream core around a blue star sits on a deep red field, with a pendant at each end. Dainty scrolling vines, palmettes and small blossoms in steel blue, cream and olive crowd the ground. Each corner holds a handsome near-black spandrel with a cream corner piece. The narrow main border has a blue ground carrying red and cream scrolling leaves, set between cream bands of small red and blue blossoms. The pile is low in places across the field, with pale specks where the foundation shows. It brings a strong red to a room, and the blue border and the steel blue in the vines cool it. At 7'1" by 10'7", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mashhad rugs

Imam Riza, the eighth Shi’ite imam, is buried at Mashhad, and the city is a great destination of pilgrims. In 1877 the Qajar shah gave London’s South Kensington Museum 14 carpets chosen by his ministers to represent the best being woven, one of them made in Mashhad. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. Its rugs show a single dominant medallion and deep madder red grounds. This rug has one medallion on a deep red ground, and its fine vine work fills the field from edge to edge. The border is narrow, in blue and cream, and frames the red closely.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
