About this rug

Notched pendants reach from a stepped light blue medallion into the red of this remarkable rug. Deep red fills the field, joined by a large central medallion and gray spandrels at the top and bottom ends. The medallion is a stepped light blue shape with a small cream hexagon at its core, sending splendid notched pendants into the red. The spandrels are smoke gray with red, holding small geometric blossoms and hooked leaves. A gorgeous cream main border carries stylized flowers and rosettes in red, blue and gold, framed by red guard stripes with small cream marks and zigzags. The pile is full over the face and borders. It holds a strong red line through a room, cooled by the blue center and cream frame. At 5'3" by 10'11", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Saveh rugs

Local tradition held that Saveh once stood on the shore of a lake that dried up at the moment the Prophet was born. Marco Polo wrote that the Three Magi set out from Saba, the city now called Saveh, and that they lay buried there in three large tombs side by side. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving here sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. The palette is warm, built on madder red with cream and indigo alongside. This rug has a stepped light blue medallion with straight edges on a red field. The cream border carries angular flowers in red, blue and gold.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
