Boteh and geometric motifs repeat from one end to the other in this charming rug. At the center, a dense repeat of small geometric motifs and boteh covers the deep red field in rust, ochre and dark green. There is no medallion, only this all-over pattern from one end to the other. The corners carry the same small drawing as the rest of the field, with no separate spandrel pieces. A handsome dark blue main border frames the field, with a graceful scalloped gray-green vine and stepped red and pink rosettes. Narrow guard stripes in dark brown and red edge the border on both sides. The pile is low in places across the red field, where scattered white flecks and a flatter, darker stretch show. It brings a long line of warm red into a narrow room, cooled by the dark blue frame. At 5'5" by 10'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kordi rugs
Kordi means Kurdish weaving, and it is a way of working rather than a single place. In the 17th century Shah Abbas I resettled Zafaranlu Kurds in Ghoochan, in northeastern Persia, to guard the frontier. Older Kurdish rugs of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, among them garden carpets and the harshang design, are known for their exuberant colors. Kurdish weavers across western Persia and into Khorasan share a preference for geometric drawing. This rug keeps that geometric habit in its small stepped rosettes and the angular vines of the border. Rather than large tribal emblems, the field covers its red ground with a fine lattice of boteh and tiny flower heads.

Full care guideReturns

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
