About this rug

A strict grid of octagonal guls spreads across this amazing rug. Rows of beautiful octagonal guls in dark brown and cream cover the deep red field. Small geometric connectors link these guls in a strict grid across the ground. The design repeats to the edges with no central medallion. A gorgeous gray beige main border carries large red lobed shapes and dark geometric figures. Narrow guard stripes with small diamonds in dark brown and cream frame the red ground. Full pile stands over the face, keeping the angular drawing distinct and the colors clear. Cream details lift the deep red ground, giving the rug a strong graphic line on the floor. At 5'1" by 12'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ghoochan rugs

Most people of Ghoochan descend from a tribe of Za’faranlu Kurds whom Shah Abbas I resettled there in the 17th century. They guarded the frontier, and in return lived under their own hereditary leader, exempt from all tribute. Ghoochan lies in northern Khorasan in eastern Persia, close to the Turkmen country, and the weaving shows it. The designs are the repeating geometric figures of the northeast rather than the curves of the Persian center, worked in madder red and dark blue. This rug keeps those repeating forms, with a strict grid of octagonal guls spread evenly over the long format. Small cream and dark details inside each gul give the red ground its texture.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
