Saveh Rugs
Saveh, southwest of Tehran in central Persia, turns out honest village rugs: firm geometry, dependable wool and warm reds, with blue and ivory in the drawing. They were woven to be walked on, not admired from a distance. Every Saveh here is a vintage piece, gently worn and professionally washed before it was listed.
Saveh: sturdy village weaving from central Persia
Saveh lies southwest of Tehran in central Persia, in country that produces solid, unfussy village carpets. Saveh weaving favors clear geometry on warm madder fields, built the practical way the region builds its rugs: firm, hard-wearing, and made for daily use.
Signs of a Saveh
- Drawing: clear geometric medallions and repeating field motifs.
- Color: warm madder red fields with indigo, ivory and camel.
- Weave: firm village construction on cotton.
- Sizes: mostly runners and small rugs, with a few medium pieces.
Rooms for a Saveh
Saveh rugs are workhorses. They suit hallways, kitchens, family rooms and anywhere a fine carpet would be wasted. The warm red field and clear geometry take real life without complaint.

Expect abrash, slight irregularity in the borders and medallions that are not perfectly centered. In a Saveh these are signs of a rug woven in a village home, not flaws.

They are among the more sensibly priced hand-knotted Persian rugs, largely because they are village pieces rather than city workshop production.
Sizing a Saveh
Saveh weaving is at its best in the sizes it was made for, and here that mostly means runners and smaller rugs. A Saveh runner should leave roughly a hand’s width of floor on each side of the corridor instead of filling it wall to wall, so it still looks like a rug and not like fitted carpet. Beside a bed, in front of a kitchen sink or inside a front door, a small Saveh puts wool exactly where you stand most.
Caring for a Saveh
These are among the easiest rugs to live with. Vacuum without a beater bar, turn the rug end for end once a year so the light and the footfall move around, and use a pad underneath, which does far more for the life of a rug than anything else. Blot spills rather than rubbing them, and do it quickly. Professional cleaning every few years is plenty; nothing here needs anything more elaborate.
Checking condition
Look at the photographs of the ends and the sides, which is where a rug shows its age first. Some wear to the pile along a traffic line is normal and expected on a vintage carpet and is not a problem. Every Saveh here was washed and cleaned by specialists we have trusted for years before it was listed, and the condition notes on each rug tell you what we found.
