Large stepped cartouches run down the center of this charming rug. Deep red cartouches stack down a near-black field, with brown, cream and gray worked into each panel. A column of large stepped cartouches runs down the center, with small diamond motifs between them and small animals and a figure in some. The splendid main border is red, carrying small hexagons and S-shaped motifs in near-black burgundy and cream. Narrow stripes of red and cream dashes edge the border on both sides. A few patches have worn low in the near-black ground, with the foundation visible in spots. Tight drawing leads the eye down the length, while red keeps the near-black ground from looking heavy. At 2'4" by 9'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Saveh rugs
The story goes that Saveh held one of the greatest libraries of the East until the Mongols destroyed it on their first invasion of Persia. An English consul named Abbott, who passed through Saveh in 1849, called it the most ruinous town he had ever seen. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving here sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. The palette is warm, built on madder red with cream and indigo alongside. This runner keeps the madder red of that palette, with brown and cream alongside. The straight-edged panels hold small animals and a figure, each set on the near-black ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
