About this rug

Three near-black hexagonal medallions make this a remarkable rug. At the center, three handsome hexagonal medallions with near-black grounds run down a deep red field. Each holds hooked motifs in pink, orange and blue around a small diamond, and short striped bands link one medallion to the next. A zigzag edge in black and cream outlines every medallion, and a thin black line sets the red field off from the border. The main border is brown, set with small crosses in pink, blue and cream and tiny blossoms in pink and gold. Full pile covers the field and the border. It anchors a narrow passage, the near-black medallions grounding the deep red around them. At 2'6" by 8'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. They spent the winter near sea level on the Moghan steppe and the summer about 160 kilometers south, in the high pastures of the Savalan range. Persian Azerbaijan is the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions with a shared vocabulary of angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. The rugs were made for houses in a cold region, not for export catalogs. This runner shares that angular vocabulary, with zigzag-edged hexagons and hooked forms set against a deep red field. The three medallions repeat down the length, their cores picked out in pink and blue.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
