About this rug

Hooked diamonds repeat from end to end of this lovely rug. On a deep red field, rows of small hooked diamonds repeat from end to end. Each lozenge is outlined in near-black and holds a tiny gold cross at its center. No medallion interrupts the steady lattice that fills the ground. The main border is a pale tan band with small red hearts and dark buds, set outside a thin dark line. The pile is low in places, and the red reads paler where the weave shows through. The small geometric marks lead the eye down a narrow passage. At 2'6" by 9'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. The Swiss firm Ziegler began there in the mid-1870s with 40 looms, and by 1894 had 1,200 in the town and 1,500 more in the surrounding villages. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. Surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, with an all-over floral field and a restrained palette as the shared character. This runner keeps that all-over character, though the drawing in this piece is geometric rather than floral. The restrained palette holds to red, near-black and cream, with only a touch of blue in the end border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
