About this rug

Cream vines and brown leaves on a deep red field make this a lovely rug. Cream vines, brown leaves and small sky blue blossoms cover the deep red field. A beautiful cream diamond medallion sits at the center, holding a red rosette. Gorgeous cream spandrels fill the four corners. The main border is dark brown, set with tiny cream and pink dots. The pile is low in places across the field, and the red reads paler in spots. It fits along a corridor wall, where the cream drawing lifts the deep red ground. At 2'11" by 9'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner is one of those long formats. The deep red field holds a single diamond medallion, framed by a dark brown border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
