Stepped medallions in a central column make this a charming rug. Across a deep red ground, small geometric motifs in ivory, olive and steel blue fill the space around a central column of medallions. Three handsome stepped medallions run down the middle, the top and bottom ones in ivory around a small red core. Tiny blossoms, diamonds and angular motifs in cream and gold crowd the red between them. A narrow dark blue border frames the field. A few patches show pale marks where the foundation appears. It grounds a narrow passage, with the warm red and ivory drawing leading the eye along. At 2'7" by 10'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. The physician and philosopher Avicenna died in Hamedan in 1037, and in the 1950s his tomb there was rebuilt as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. This runner follows the region’s angular drawing. Three stepped medallions sit among tiny blossoms in ivory and olive on the red ground. Warm tones dominate, with ivory and near-black alongside the red.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
