About this rug

Medallions in muted pink sit on the deep red ground of this charming rug. At the center, three gorgeous elongated hexagonal medallions in muted pink sit on a deep red field scattered with small rosettes. Each is edged with a serrated navy line and holds small stepped motifs in navy, brown and red. A wide coral border carries blue, red and brown crosses between slanting bars. Inside it, a cream guard stripe runs with small hooked motifs in brown, red and blue. Pile runs low in spots across the red ground, with white specks of foundation showing. The dense drawing in the medallion cores keeps their shapes clear against the red. At 3' by 10'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. Several generations ago many rugs from the villages around Hamedan were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This one is a long format with three medallions in a single line down the red. The pale pink of the medallions stands out against the deeper field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
