About this rug

A cream diamond medallion rests in the middle of this amazing rug. Worked on a deep red field, scrolling vines carry pink, cream and slate blue blossoms with small gold leaves. A cream diamond medallion rests in the middle, edged in near-black and holding a floral core in olive green and red. Cream and slate blue spandrels fill the four corners, set with curling vines that echo the central motif. The main border is near-black, carrying a charming red scrolling vine and small rosettes in pink and gold. Cream guard stripes marked with rust dashes edge the border on both sides. The pile is full across the face. It grounds a narrow passage, the warm red letting the cream and slate blue details stand out. At 3'1" by 9'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Alexander the Great gathered the Persian treasure and left it at Ecbatana, now Hamedan, in the keeping of his chief treasurer Harpalus. His closest friend Hephaestion died there in the autumn of 324 BCE. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner keeps that long format, with a central medallion and corner spandrels stretched down the length. The deep red field holds a dense floral drawing in pink, gold and slate blue, framed by a near-black border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
